What P0016 says — and what it does not prove
The controller compares crankshaft and camshaft signals and stores P0016 when their bank 1 sensor A relationship exceeds its tolerance.
The code alone cannot distinguish mechanical timing, variable valve timing, oil supply, sensors, wiring, prior repair, relearn or calibration.
Do not order a chain or sensor from the code label alone; confirm the exact engine and VIN cause.
Can the vehicle still be driven?
A steady lamp without noise or drivability change may allow a cautious trip to a workshop, subject to the owner’s manual. Timing rattle, an oil warning, stalling, hard starting, severe power loss or another critical warning calls for a safe stop.
Mechanical mistiming can damage an engine. Repeated cranking may worsen the condition, and an OBD2 reader cannot assess physical timing components.
- Save P0016 and every companion code before clearing.
- Record current, stored or pending status.
- Capture freeze frame, mileage, temperature and circumstances.
- Report recent oil, battery, engine or timing work.
Cause families that must be separated
Start with history, oil level and apparent condition according to the manual, visible connectors and recent work. Professional testing may then involve electrical signals, oil pressure, variable timing data and a mechanical timing check.
Oil specification, timing marks, torque values and relearns are engine-specific. Do not improvise timing or programming.
- Shifted or worn chain/belt, guide or tensioner.
- Variable timing control, oil passage or pressure problem.
- Crank/cam sensor, connector or harness.
- Swapped connector or assembly error after repair.
- Application-specific relearn or calibration.
- Narrow internal mechanical defect defined by model, engine and VIN.

A decision plan before replacing parts
Save the initial report and companion codes such as P0011 or P0017–P0019. Check oil level without dismantling as the manual directs, and report noise or recent repairs. A professional can compare signals, test oil pressure and mechanical timing, then search VIN-specific information.
Repair must precede clearing. Scan again after an appropriate confirmation drive; a code that does not return immediately is not proof that the cause has gone.
