What P0128 measures — and what it does not prove
The controller monitors warm-up against time, ambient conditions, load and vehicle-specific criteria. P0128 may set when temperature remains below the expected threshold.
Possible explanations include an early-opening thermostat, abnormal coolant level or flow, an implausible temperature signal, wiring, or manufacturer-documented logic. The code alone cannot select a part.
P0128 is a monitoring result, not a universal instruction to replace the thermostat.
Slow warm-up is not the same as overheating
Weak cabin heat, increased fuel use or a gauge that stays low may occur. Yet low coolant or another circuit fault can also develop into overheating.
Stop safely if the gauge enters the red, an overheat message appears, steam or coolant escapes, or a critical warning illuminates. Never open a hot expansion tank or radiator cap.

Cause families to separate before replacement

A cautious decision plan
Save the initial report and companion codes. Compare displayed cold-start temperature with ambient conditions without treating that as a diagnosis. Check coolant only when cold and look for visible leakage. If warm-up remains abnormal, have thermostat, sensor, circulation and VIN information assessed.
After confirmed repair, clear and scan again following an appropriate drive. A code that stays absent briefly is not proof of repair because the monitor needs specific conditions to run.
