Key takeaway

Save P0562, companion codes, voltage and freeze-frame data. If steering, lighting or the engine becomes unstable, stop safely. Have the battery, charging, connections and voltage drops checked; clear only after repair.

01

What P0562 means and when to stop

P0562 means that a controller observed supply voltage below its expected range. It does not measure battery capacity by itself and does not identify the responsible part. The recorded value must be read in context: key-on, cranking, idle, driving or shortly after shutdown.

A slow start with a steady light calls for prompt checks. Dimming lamps, blanking screens, reduced steering assistance, stalling or a hot-cable smell are more urgent: reduce use and stop safely. Do not continue merely because the engine still runs.

  • P0562 alone or many power and communication codes?
  • At start-up, idle, while driving or after long parking?
  • Battery recently replaced, charged or jump-started?
  • Dimming lamps, charging message, heavy steering, stalling or slow cranking?
Good practice

Unstable voltage can disturb several modules at once. Multiple warnings do not prove multiple independent failures.

Three manufacturer cases: cable, software or hybrid system

GM links P0562 and many symptoms to resistance or looseness in cables, a ground, a short or a discharged battery. Ram documents an ECM software improvement on one exact diesel configuration. Maserati uses P0562 and freeze-frame timing to distinguish a driving event from external electrical overstress while the engine was off.

These cases provide evidence and method, not a universal diagnosis. Model, year, engine, market, VIN and measurements must match before a manufacturer procedure applies.

Battery, alternator, cables or draw: how to reason

A proper check starts with state of charge and battery capability, then voltage at rest, during cranking and with the engine running according to the vehicle procedure. A good open-circuit value is not enough: a battery may collapse under load, while a corroded cable may lose voltage only during heavy starter current.

A technician checks terminals, grounds, fuse block, starter cable, charging system and abnormal key-off current. Smart-charging and hybrid vehicles add charge requests, battery sensors and converters. Never disconnect the battery with the engine running as an alternator test; this can damage electronics.

Temperature, charging phase, stop-start and electrical loads change normal voltage. Use manufacturer specifications and suitable instruments.

What to save before clearing

Capture P0562, its status and every present or pending code. Save available controller voltage, rpm, temperature and freeze-frame data. Record whether it appeared at first start, after a journey, charging or heavy electrical load.

Note battery age, recent work and jump-starts. Early clearing can remove the timing and context that separates a cranking dip from a driving fault. Recheck code and system behaviour after a real repair.

  • P0562 status, companion codes and mileage.
  • Available voltage, rpm, temperature and electrical load.
  • Fault moment: cranking, idle, driving, long parking or external charging.
  • Battery age, added accessories and recent starter, alternator or cable work.

How OBDPhone® helps

OBDPhone® reads generic engine and emissions fault codes and available engine data. It can preserve P0562, related codes, vehicle-reported voltage and fault conditions. Availability and accuracy depend on the vehicle; this is not a battery load test or dedicated electrical measurement.

OBDPhone® does not measure battery capacity, cable voltage drop or parasitic current. ABS, airbags, traction batteries, coding, programming and manufacturer functions are not guaranteed. Clear only after repair. Check your vehicle or contact support@obdphone.com. Official sources checked 25 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

The essential answers.

Does P0562 mean the battery is dead?+

No. A weak battery is possible, but official cases also involve cables, connections, grounds, a short or software.

Can I drive with P0562?+

Stop safely if lighting, steering, screens or the engine becomes unstable. Otherwise limit use and arrange a prompt electrical check.

Can an app voltage value test the battery?+

No. It does not measure loaded capacity, cable voltage drop or parasitic current; suitable testing is still required.

Should I clear P0562 before replacing the battery?+

No. Save the code, status and freeze frame, confirm the cause and clear only after repair.
