Key takeaway

An empty screen is not a diagnosis. Confirm the warning and connection status, save the complete result and have a persistent mismatch investigated. Do not clear anything to try to make a code appear; clear only after repair.

01

First, the car’s behaviour matters more than the scan

If the engine shakes severely, suddenly loses power, stalls or a red warning accompanies the alert, stop safely and seek assistance. A no-code result is not permission to keep driving. Do not take a test drive just to force a fault to register.

For a steady light with apparently normal operation, arrange prompt diagnosis and follow the vehicle handbook. This is not a guarantee that driving is safe. Check the app while parked with the parking brake applied; never operate the phone while driving or run the engine in an enclosed space.

02

1. Identify the warning and when it appears

Photograph the symbol and exact message. A service spanner, ABS lamp, airbag lamp or oil-pressure warning must not be treated as the emissions-related engine light. The vehicle handbook is the reference for their meaning and required action. Do not try to reset these warnings through a generic engine scan.

Record whether the lamp appears only with ignition on before starting or remains on with the engine running. The start-up lamp check can be normal; it is different from a warning that persists during a journey. However, never restart an engine showing a serious warning merely to check the difference.

2. Separate ‘connected to the reader’ from ‘scan completed’

Car Scanner’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes the adapter connection from the controller connection. Check the full connection status, not just the Bluetooth icon.

Read the exact result: ‘no response’, ‘connection failed’ and ‘no faults detected’ are not equivalent. Save screenshots of connection status and the scan result. Treat a failed or interrupted session as inconclusive, not as an empty fault list.

Use the profile appropriate to your vehicle and the settings in the OBDPhone® instructions. Do not select a similar engine at random to unlock more functions. Check generation, year and fuel type in the compatibility checker too; a connector that fits does not guarantee every type of access.

Plausible engine data can help show that some communication exists, but does not prove that every fault category was read. Conversely, a missing value does not prove a failed sensor: Car Scanner’s FAQ explains that available data vary by vehicle.

3. Read the scan scope and code statuses

Save the whole report, not only the number at the top of a screen. Identify the controller queried, selected profile and categories actually read. Where the app distinguishes them, record confirmed, pending and permanent codes separately; an empty category does not describe all the others.

A generic engine and emissions scan is not a report on every controller. If a workshop finds a fault missing from your scan, ask for its exact code, status and module before comparing results. The tools may cover different areas; that difference alone does not prove either party made a mistake.

A situation explicitly covered by an institutional source

EPA report EPA420-R-01-015, June 2001, discusses a lamp remaining on with the engine running although no codes are present. It identifies a communication failure as one possible explanation and distinguishes the visible lamp from its diagnostic command status. A persistent warning therefore should not be dismissed just because the code list is empty.

Evidence limit: this is a US technical document about OBD inspections, not an OBDPhone® vehicle test, customer case or universal repair procedure. Its inspection criteria are not presented as UK MOT or other European inspection rules. We use the distinction between display and diagnostic state, not a conclusion about your car.

4. Build a useful record instead of starting again

Before closing the app, save the date, mileage, model, year, fuel type, profile and app version. Include the warning photograph, connection status and report. Describe symptoms without assigning a cause: ‘shakes at cold idle’ is more useful than an unverified ‘failed coil’.

Mention any recent clearing, battery disconnection or work on the car. Clearing can remove clues and reset readiness monitors; it does not fix the vehicle. If a later scan finds a code, save any available freeze-frame data. Ask the technician to compare this record with actual measurements before replacing components.

What OBDPhone® can contribute — and its limits

OBDPhone® reads generic engine and emissions fault codes and available engine data. It provides useful information for diagnosis; an empty scan does not certify the car’s mechanical condition. Clear only after repair.

Access to ABS, airbags, the traction battery, coding, programming and manufacturer-specific functions is not guaranteed. For an inconsistent result, send the useful record to support@obdphone.com without publishing personal information. Sources checked on 27 October 2026. Frequently asked questions

The essential answers.

Does no OBD2 code mean no fault?+

No. It describes one scan result. Check that the scan completed, what it covered and whether symptoms or a warning remain.

Is an engine light before starting always abnormal?+

No. It may be the lamp check. Consult the handbook and distinguish this from a light remaining on with the engine running. Do not restart with a serious warning just to check.

Should I immediately buy a more expensive scanner?+

Not just because the screen is empty. First identify the warning, scan completion and scope. A persistent mismatch then warrants checking with suitable equipment.

Can clearing fix the lack of codes?+

Clearing is not a diagnostic or repair method. Save the information, have the cause confirmed and clear only after repair.
