Key takeaway

Avoid loading the engine and never loosen a high-pressure fuel line. Save the code, associated faults and available data, then have the exact vehicle system checked. P0087 does not automatically condemn the pump.

01

Can you keep driving with P0087?

P0087 may come with extended cranking, stalling, hesitation, power loss or limp mode. If the engine stalls, will not start, loses substantial power, or you see or smell a fuel leak, stop safely and seek assistance. Do not use repeated hard acceleration to see whether the fault returns.

Even with a steady light and apparently normal driving, avoid unnecessary journeys and high loads until the vehicle is checked. The code alone cannot guarantee adequate pressure during overtaking, climbing or restarting. Follow the vehicle handbook as well.

  • Steady or flashing light, power loss or stalling?
  • Hard start cold, hot or after refuelling?
  • P0087 alone or with P0088, P0191, P0300 or P0299?
  • Recent work on filter, injectors, pump or tank?
Good practice

Fuel-injection systems can retain dangerous pressure after the engine stops. Never loosen a line, rail or injector to check whether fuel is reaching it.

The GM case that prevents a rushed pump diagnosis

GM bulletin 16-NA-102 covers specific North American diesel vans and pick-ups. For hard-start or no-start complaints that may include P0087, GM first requires the vehicle diagnostic routine. If that routine leads to pump replacement, the technician must still inspect the regulator and, depending on findings, other components for debris.

The document separates several decisions: continue the planned pump repair when no relevant debris is present, extend the inspection when a small amount of magnetic debris appears, or use a different contamination procedure for non-magnetic material. P0087 therefore proves neither pump failure nor the need to replace the whole system.

What should you prepare for the workshop?

Save P0087, its status, associated codes and any available freeze-frame data. Note fuel level, engine temperature, the circumstances and recent work. Requested and measured pressure, when exposed by the vehicle, may add context but do not replace vehicle-specific testing.

Ask which test separates supply, restriction, control, measurement, internal leakage or pump failure. High-pressure inspections and system opening require trained personnel. Buying a sensor, regulator or pump first can hide the cause and inflate the repair bill.

  • Exact code, status and freeze-frame screenshot.
  • Mileage, fuel quantity and latest fill-up.
  • Starting, stalling, noise, smoke and power loss.
  • Recent repair and filter reference, if known.

How OBDPhone® helps

OBDPhone® reads generic engine and emissions fault codes and available engine data. It helps preserve P0087, associated codes and context for the repairer. It does not mechanically measure pressure, test system sealing or replace the manufacturer procedure.

Clear the code only after repair to check whether it returns. ABS, airbags, traction batteries, coding, programming and manufacturer-specific functions are not guaranteed. Check your vehicle or contact support@obdphone.com. Official source last checked 15 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

The essential answers.

Does P0087 mean the high-pressure pump has failed?+

No. It describes low pressure. The GM bulletin shows that further diagnosis and inspection are required before deciding.

Can I drive with P0087?+

Avoid heavy load and arrange prompt diagnosis. Stop safely for stalling, major power loss, a no-start condition or a fuel leak.

Can a fuel filter cause P0087?+

A supply restriction is one possible route, but the code does not prove the filter is responsible. Testing is vehicle-specific.

Should I clear P0087 before visiting a workshop?+

No. Save the code, status and available data first. Clear it only after repair.
