Save the code, status, related codes and freeze frame before clearing. Do not order an injector automatically: have the connector and harness checked with information matched to the exact engine, model year and VIN.
What P0201 reports — and what it does not prove
The final digit identifies cylinder 1. The controller monitors its injector command circuit and stores P0201 when the electrical behaviour differs from what is expected. The wording may say circuit malfunction or open circuit, depending on the tool and vehicle.
The code alone cannot distinguish a failed injector from a connector or harness fault. It also does not prove that the injector is mechanically blocked. Related codes, symptoms and measurements made with manufacturer wiring data are needed.
P0201 is an electrical lead for cylinder 1, not permission to replace the injector without testing.
Misfire, power loss or fuel smell: assess urgency
Rough idle, hesitation, power loss, hard starting or misfire may accompany P0201. P0300 or P0301 may also be present. Record whether the fault appears hot, cold, after a repair or with engine movement.
Stop safely if the warning light flashes, the engine shakes severely, stalls, loses power abruptly, or fuel is visibly leaking or strongly smelt. Never work on a high-pressure diesel circuit without the correct training and equipment.
- Capture P0201, its status and every related code.
- Save available freeze-frame data before clearing.
- Record operating conditions and recent work.
- Do not unplug an injector with the engine running or open a high-pressure line.
Useful checks before buying an injector
With the engine stopped and cold, an accessible visual inspection may reveal an unlocked connector, displaced terminal, moisture, corrosion, or wiring rubbed, pinched or stretched after previous work. Do not pull the wires or probe terminals at random.
Power, command, continuity and insulation tests are vehicle-specific. There is no universal voltage or pinout. On some engines, access, replacement or injector coding requires a professional procedure and high-pressure fuel precautions.
- Connector condition, locking and terminal tension.
- Harness rubbing, pinching, repairs, sharp edges or heat exposure.
- P0300/P0301 or other injector codes.
- Electrical measurements using the vehicle diagram.
- Bulletin eligibility by engine, year, market and VIN.
Six manufacturer situations that prevent guesswork
These official documents show that the same code can lead to different checks. They provide no failure rate and cannot be transferred to unlisted European vehicles.
| Vehicle | Engine / year | Official observation | Evidence and limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Passat | 2.0 DDSA or DGUA; 2018 | VW links P0201–P0204 to harness-connection issues and directs inspection of the short 8-pin harness, terminals, corrosion and routing before the injector. | 97-18-02TT; manufacturer Tech Tip, exact US application only. |
| Volkswagen Beetle / Beetle Convertible | 2.0 DDSA or DGUA; 2018 | If the harness checks reveal nothing, the document calls for a controlled injector swap to see whether the fault follows the injector, followed by a targeted repair. | 97-18-02TT; workshop procedure, not a DIY swapping recommendation. |
| Volkswagen Tiguan LWB | 2.0 DDSA or DGUA; 2018 | If the fault remains on the original cylinder after the specified checks, VW points to the circuit between controller and injector rather than automatic injector replacement. | 97-18-02TT; exact vehicle, engine, year and market only. |
| Chevrolet Silverado HD / GMC Sierra HD | L5P; 2017–2023 | GM documents vibration-related contact wear between the connector terminal and high-pressure diesel injector; the connector is checked before condemning the injector. | 23-NA-027; manufacturer bulletin, listed regions and models only. |
| Chevrolet Silverado 4500HD–6500HD | L5D; 2019–2023 | GM directs checks for poor terminal tension or black fretting powder and verifies that wiring does not contact the acoustic deadener. | 23-NA-027; professional high-pressure diesel work. |
| Listed Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Silverado 1500/Suburban/Tahoe and GMC Sierra 1500/Yukon | 3.0 diesel LM2; 2019–2023 by model | For P0201–P0206/P0216, GM directs checks of X160 terminal tension, injector-connector seating and pinched or chafed wiring near X160. | 21-NA-149; regional bulletin, exact model, year, engine and VIN required. |
These are manufacturer cases, not OBDPhone® tests of the listed powertrains. They establish neither a failure rate, specific compatibility nor a universal repair.
A decision order that avoids unnecessary cost
Save the evidence and assess symptom severity first. Inspect what is visible, then have the circuit measured with the vehicle diagram. Replace an injector only when testing truly separates it from its connector and wiring.
After a confirmed repair, clear P0201 and re-read the codes after the required operating conditions. If it returns or P0301 remains, continue combustion and compression diagnosis instead of replacing parts at random.
Useful order: save, make safe, inspect, measure to the diagram, verify VIN, repair, then confirm.
What OBDPhone® can do with P0201 — and its limits
On a compatible vehicle, OBDPhone® can read P0201 and other generic engine and emissions codes, display engine data exposed by the vehicle and save a report. Clear only after repair or a justified check.
OBDPhone® does not electrically test the injector and does not guarantee active tests, manufacturer functions, coding, programming, ABS, airbags or traction-battery access. Use a professional for measurements, high-pressure fuel systems and VIN procedures. Support: support@obdphone.com.
Frequently asked questions
The essential answers.
Does P0201 mean injector 1 has failed?+
No. The injector is one possibility; its connector, a terminal, wiring or the control circuit may also be responsible.
Can I drive with P0201?+
It depends on symptoms and the manual. A flashing light, severe shaking, stalling, major power loss or a fuel leak requires a safe stop.
What is the difference between P0201 and P0301?+
P0201 concerns the cylinder 1 injector command circuit. P0301 reports a detected combustion misfire on that cylinder and has a broader set of possible causes.
Can OBDPhone® confirm a failed injector?+
No. It reads generic engine/emissions codes and available data. Confirmation requires the correct vehicle-specific measurements.
