What P2002 actually means
The generic description is diesel particulate filter efficiency below threshold, bank 1. The control unit checks whether the DPF captures enough particles, using a particulate sensor, differential pressure, temperatures and other engine data according to the design.
The code describes a monitoring result, not the filter’s exact physical condition. A cracked or degraded DPF may pass too many particles, while a sensor signal or upstream engine condition can also mislead the monitor. Model, engine, year and sometimes VIN-specific information is essential.
P2002 does not automatically mean ‘too much soot’. It first means that measured or inferred filtration efficiency is insufficient.
Possible symptoms and caution
The check-engine light may be the only sign. There may also be reduced power, frequent regeneration, higher consumption or smoke, but none identifies the failed component by itself.
Stop safely and seek advice for a flashing light, heavy smoke, abnormal temperature, unusual noise or severe power loss. Exhaust parts reach very high temperatures during regeneration.
- Save every present and pending code.
- Record mileage and operating conditions.
- Keep differential pressure, exhaust temperature and soot-load data only when the vehicle actually exposes them.
- Never work on a hot exhaust.
Do not confuse P2002, P2463 and P242F
P2002 concerns filter efficiency. P2463 identifies restriction caused by soot accumulation, while P242F identifies restriction caused by ash accumulation. They may occur together but do not mean the same thing.
A controlled regeneration can burn soot when the vehicle permits it. It cannot remove mineral ash, repair a cracked DPF, fix a sensor or leak, or correct software. Never improvise a forced regeneration without the manufacturer’s checks and procedure.
Clearing P2002 or forcing regeneration at random can erase evidence without correcting the cause.

A service bulletin does not prove that your vehicle has the same cause. Confirm applicability by VIN, engine, model year and market.
A sensible diagnostic sequence
Save the exact code, status, freeze frame and related faults. With the engine cold, inspect for damaged wiring, pressure hoses, exhaust leaks or an obviously displaced charge-air connection. Do not test or disconnect sensors without a reliable procedure.
Further work may require differential-pressure, particulate-sensor, temperature and leak checks plus regeneration history. Compare results with manufacturer values and VIN-specific bulletins before deciding on regeneration, professional cleaning, repair or replacement.
